Additional Information
The gene target for B. pertussis molecular testing, a region of IS481, is also found in Bordetella holmesii. A false-positive result for Bordetella pertussis DNA may occur if Bordetella holmesii is present in the specimen tested. Alternatively, the gene target for B. parapertussis molecular testing, a region of IS1001, is also found in Bordetella bronchiseptica. A false-positive result for Bordetella parapertussis DNA may occur if Bordetella bronciseptica is present in the specimen tested.
Causes for Rejection
- Incorrect specimen type (swab site or swab type)
- Absence of or inconsistent specimen labeling and identification
- Specimen leaked in transit
- Specimen submission form not properly filled out
- Specimen received in expired transport medium
- Specimen received at the laboratory more than 97 hours after collection
- Specimen received out of the appropriate temperature range
